Sherine Hafez is Assistant Professor of Women’s Studies at the University of California, Riverside. Her interests and research center on women’s studies in Arab and Middle Eastern cultures. Hafez’s first book The Terms of Empowerment: Islamic Women Activists in Egypt, (American University Cairo Press, 2003) critiqued liberal Western conceptions of female empowerment and women’s activism in Muslim societies. Her current book, An Islam of Her Own: Reconsidering Religion And Secularism In Women's Islamic Movements, (New York University Press, 2011)is based upon extensive research on the role of women in Islamic organizations in Cairo, Egypt.
